Challenges
The National Association of Councillors (NAC) represents elected members across the UK, providing training and support to help them navigate the evolving challenges of governance. As AI becomes increasingly relevant in public sector decision-making, NAC members expressed concerns about AI’s ethical implications, data security risks, and its role in council operations. There was also uncertainty about how AI could be practically applied to enhance efficiency and decision-making within their councils.
Approach
CloudyIT was invited to the NAC Conference to deliver a focused AI training session tailored for councillors. Led by Steve Walker and Mathew Turnbull, our approach began with an interactive SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) to explore AI’s impact on local government. This session helped frame AI within the realities of council work, acknowledging risks while highlighting potential benefits.
To provide real-world context, we presented case studies demonstrating AI’s applications in governance, from automating administrative tasks to improving public engagement and decision-making. After addressing initial concerns, we transitioned into a two-hour hands-on AI workshop, allowing councillors to directly engage with AI tools. This practical experience was instrumental in building confidence and demonstrating AI’s usability.
We also dedicated time to discussing key issues such as ethics, transparency, and data protection, ensuring members underBy the end of the workshop, attendees had a more informed and practical understanding of AI. Initial apprehension gave way to greater confidence in how AI could be responsibly implemented. Members left with a strong foundation in AI and a clear perspective on how it could support their work in governance.
Outcomes

"CloudyIT’s session at the NAC Conference was invaluable. AI initially felt like a challenge we weren’t equipped to handle, but through their clear explanations and hands-on approach, we now have the knowledge to explore AI’s benefits responsibly."
